Mtawali, Mponda, Chiukepo set for legends debut
South Africa-based former Flames coach and midfielder Ernest ‘Wire’ Mtawali alongside ex-captain Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda and striker Chiukepo Msowoya are expected to make their debuts for Malawi Football Legends as the hype builds up for the upcoming international friendly against Zambia Legends.
The match is scheduled for December 28 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

England-based former striker Esau Kanyenda is also working on logistics for his availability while US-based Mphatso Namwali, who was a key member of the Flames side that won the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) Senior Challenge Cup in 1988, is already in the country.
Football Legends Association board second vice-chairperson Justin Saidi said in an interview yesterday that the trio has already confirmed availability.
He said: “We felt it will be exciting to have these celebrated sons of the soil taking the fans down memory lane when they used to charm the fans with their magical skills.
“It will be their first match since they joined us and we are excited that it will spice up the event.
“Ernest has already confirmed his availability and we are also crossing our fingers that Kanyenda should be able to make it. Otherwise, Namwali is already in the country on holiday.”
Mtawali confirmed his availability in an interview yesterday.
“I can’t wait to reunite with fellow former players and entertain the fans. What is important is the cause and I thank the leadership of the Football Legends Association for making this happen,” he said.
“The importance of such a noble initiative cannot be overemphasised. I urge the fans to come and they will have fun.”
On his part, Mponda said: “It will be great to team up with the guys again and take part in such a big match.”
Former midfielder Joseph Kamwendo, who missed the first match in Chipata, Zambia in October last year, is also available for the match.
